Town Hall after fire main entrance

On Thursday, February 4th, 1904, at seven p.m., a fire of undetermined origin broke our in the old Town Hall. Despite efforts of the Stamford Fire Department and aid of fire fighting units from New Canaan, Greenwich, Port Chester and Bridgeport, the flames soon escaped control. A raging inferno by midnight, the building was completely gutted by four a.m. Town Clerk William F. Waterbury and Probate Judge Frederick C. Taylor, early at the scene salvaged most of the town records, while the fire was still confined to the upper floors. Postmaster Joshua Fessenden directed the removal of mail material to the Burlington Arcade Building on Upper Atlantic Street. Among the merchants occupying space on the ground floor at the time, were Murphy and Reardon's Factory Hat Store

and Amburt S. Kellogg's Toy Store. The Town Clerk's office and Post Office were at the south end of the building. It was subsequently decided to rebuild on the same site. The cornerstone for the new Town Hall was laid September 27, 1905.
